Robert Lee Ward of Bridgeport was arrested by police in Trumbull on Tuesday, Nov. 13, after he ran from officers following an alleged shoplifting incident at Target at the Trumbull Mall.

Police said that Ward ran from officers as he was being questioned inside the department store. He was intercepted by investigating officers shortly thereafter as he attempted to make his way toward the store’s upper-level exit.

He was taken into custody after a brief struggle and had to be wrestled to the ground by officers. No injuries were reported.

According to police, Ward used a pocket knife to remove a cell phone from its packaging and attempted to hide the stolen goods inside his jacket.

He then took clothes and batteries from other parts of the store and hid them under his clothing, police added.

At the time of his arrest, Ward was in possession of more than $200 in stolen merchandise.

Ward was arrested and charged with larceny, interfering with an officer and possession of a shoplifting device.

The investigation into Ward also found that he had an outstanding warrant for violating his probation from an earlier arrest in Bridgeport.

He is being held in lieu of a $50,000 bond for the warrant and $10,000 bond for the shoplifting. He is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, Nov. 21 to respond to the charges.
